The annual Juneteenth celebration is hosted in East Austin in Emancipation or Rosewood Park, which was purchased by the African American community specifically for that purpose. It is the site of one of the nation’s original Juneteenth commemoration locations. Also, Fiesta Gardens is the main public park hosting many events throughout the year.

The Holly Neighborhood borders the lake and is known for its many family-owned dining establishments. With a reputation for some of the best Bar-B-Que around, East Austin is home to La Barbecue. Looking for authentic East Austin vibe, at the corner of Holly St. and Robert Martinez Jr. St. is Launderette, which is a former laundromat, now converted to a retro cafe. In the heart of the neighborhood is Juan in a Million, an iconic Tex- Mex restaurant open for breakfast and lunch.

East Austin is also known for its vibrant arts scene where you can catch performances at the Vortex on Manor Road. When you look south of the Vortex you will find Flatbed Press, Imagine Art, and the Photo Méthode Gallery. The Cherrywood Art Fair, an annual event that East-siders look forward to each year. It brings in a variety of local artisans to display their craft.

The Schools

Austin Independent School District serves the community of East Austin. Elementary schools are represented by Campbell Elementary (PK-5), Maplewood Elementary (PK-5) and Pickle Elementary (K-5). Middle Schools that serve East Austin are Webb Middle School (6-8), Kealing Middle School (6-8) and Pecan Springs Middle School (6-8). The High-Schools that serve East Austin are Eastside Memorial High School (9-12), McCallum High School (9-12) and LBJ High School (9-12). Magnet schools are prevalent in on the east side including a nationally recognized Kealing Middle (6-8) Magnet School focusing on advanced academics and Liberal Arts and Science Academy is one of the most highly regarded High Schools in the area. Also, there are several private institutions in the area which offer exceptional education for students ranging ages from early development up to accredited college preparatory schools with advanced placement courses. Among the notable institutions of higher learning nearby, there is Huston-Tillotson University, The Eastview Campus of Austin Community College, and, of course, the University of Texas-Austin. All of which are a short drive from homes for sale in East Austin.
